Asthma is usually defined as an inflammatory disease of the airways, making them prone to narrowing and increased mucus production. It is difficult to move air in and out of the lungs. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and coughing.

During the breathing air is brought in a rule by the nose, where it is heated, filtered and humidified. It then goes through the throat and into the windpipe, called the trachea (TRAY-kee-a). The trachea divides into two large tubes called the right bronchus (Brong-kus) and left bronchus. Them into much smaller tubes that branch in turn called in thousands of very small respiratory bronchioles (Brong-kee-olz) split. It is the large and small bronchi, which are generally affected in asthma.

Asthma Causes

It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflammation in the first place. Your inflamed airways may by a combination of things. We know that when other people in your family have asthma, you tend to develop. New research suggests that may be subject to things like tobacco smoke, infections and some allergens early in your life, you increase your chances of suffering from asthma.

Asthma Treatment

Treatment and care of asthma is the relief of the attack. Parents of asthmatic children can expect a possible approach to attack and medication, sedation and bronchodilation. The control of asthma depends on finding the cause and the relinquishment. Smoking ban for adults who have asthma. There are two types of asthma medicines: those that relieve constriction of the airways and to reduce the swelling and inflammation like steroids. They are usually given via inhalers but pills are to be used as well. In some cases, studies have shown that coffee may help an acute asthma attack, supposedly because of the caffiene and heat.

Asthma Symptoms

People with asthma have symptoms when the airways are narrowed (bronchospasm), swelling (inflammation), or filled with mucus. Common symptoms of asthma include: • Coughing, especially at night • wheezing • shortness of breath • Tightness in the chest, pain, pressure or asthma medication

Asthma medications are divided into either quick relief medicines or controller / preventive medicine. Within each of these categories are several subcategories, depending on how the drug works.

Long-term control medications are medications taken daily on a long-term basis to manage the recurrence of respiratory illness. Long-term control drugs come in many forms but the most common are the inhaled corticosteroids.

Quick-relief medications are used for sudden asthma attacks. They stimulate the airways to open quickly in order to allow air into the lungs. Quick-relief medications are useful because they have few side effects and can be taken as soon as wheezing begins.

Bronchodilators are medicines that relax the direct (or “dilatation”), the muscles of the airways. Short-acting bronchodilators are “life-saving medications” to relieve an asthma attack.
